Investigators traced the phone to a prepaid purchase made near the school. Security footage showed a woman wearing a hat and sunglasses buying it. The build matched Melissa.

When confronted again, Melissa broke down. She admitted she’d been dating someone who became “obsessed” with her. She claimed she hid the phone in my house to prove to him she wasn’t seeing anyone else—using a random home from her class list so it wouldn’t be traced back to her.

“And you told my daughter to lie to me?” I said, shaking.

“She overheard me talking to myself,” Melissa sobbed. “I panicked. I didn’t want to lose my job.”

Her excuse made my stomach turn.

Melissa was arrested for unlawful surveillance and child endangerment. The school district placed her on immediate suspension. Parents were notified. Counseling was offered.

Emma didn’t speak much for days. She flinched when doors closed. She refused to sleep in her room.

I blamed myself constantly—every late pickup, every rushed goodbye.

The legal process moved slowly, but the consequences were real. Melissa lost her teaching license. A restraining order was issued. Her partner was questioned but never charged—there was no evidence he knew about the phone.
